The Congressionally funded Gilman Program broadens the U.S. student population studying and interning abroad by providing scholarships to outstanding undergraduate Pell Grant recipients who, due to financial constraints, might not otherwise study abroad. Since the program鈥檚 establishment in 2001, over 1,300 U.S. institutions have sent more than 38,000 Gilman scholars who represent the rich diversity of the United States, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories to 160 countries around the globe.

Mines鈥 2024 Gilman scholars are participating in all types of study abroad programs; students will be participating in faculty-led summer programs, academic study abroad, and international internships. These students were awarded scholarships representing a combined total of $11,500 for summer 2024, fall 2024, and academic year 2024-2025 programs.

Pamela Banuelos, a rising senior in the Chemical & Biological Engineering department, will be conducting an international research internship at the University of Augsburg in Augsburg, Germany this summer 2024. According to Pamela, 鈥淚 am very excited to be an engineer abroad and to gain research experience while also traveling the world and getting to experience a new culture.鈥

Ari鈥檍aye (Ari) Derritt, a rising sophomore in the Computer Science department, will be studying abroad in Ireland this summer 2024. Ari will have the opportunity to travel around Ireland, while also completing required coursework toward her degree in Computer Science while abroad. According to Ari, 鈥淚 am most excited about expanding my horizons and meeting new people.鈥

Isobel McGivney, a rising senior in the Applied Mathematics and Statistics department, planned to do a study abroad program at the Institute of Mathematics within the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

The Gilman Program aims to make study abroad, and its career advantages, more accessible and inclusive for students from the United States.聽The program particularly focuses on supporting first-generation college students, students in the STEM fields, ethnic and racial minority students, students with disabilities, students who are veterans, students attending community colleges and minority serving institutions, and other populations underrepresented in study abroad, as well as broadening the destinations where scholars study or intern. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gilman Program has offered expanded options to scholars, including allowing them to use the scholarship for virtual international study and internship programs.

Queensland, Australia

In my endeavor to explore environmentalism as identity, I traveled across Queensland, Australia collecting quotes from locals, photos of signage, and any examples of intrinsic environmentalism. I wanted to extrapolate the similarities and differences between environmentalism in a coastal region, to where I grew up in 海角社区. I found that there were many similarities in messaging and passion, however Australia seemed to have made more legislative progress in regards to environmental protection. Part of my trip involved visiting the Great Barrier Reef. Through the lens of my snorkeling mask, I saw four clownfish (!!!!), dozens of sea cucumbers, large bright purple and yellow sea stars, a few Moorish Idols, countless massive parrot fish, vibrant string winged oysters, a handful of angelfish and butterfly fish, and somewhat alarmingly, a baby box jellyfish. The abundance of wildlife filled my stomach with butterflies and the only thought in my head was, 鈥淲ow, this is so cool.鈥 I will be forever grateful for this experience as it broadened by world view, but also my connection to the natural world. Studying a topic that I am passionate about made it easy and fun to collect photos, notes, and ask questions to the locals around me. 鈥淲hen we are somewhere in nature, open your mind, open your hearts.鈥 Being surrounded by the incredible landscape made it easy to settle in and connect with the natural world around me. I would get lost in the shades of green, the movement of the surf, the constant chorus of the creatures above my head. I felt my heart open and fill up.

Traveling to New Zealand

Maija Turjanis

Sitting in the drizzling rain I listened to a farmer tell the story of how he and his family had run and grown their dairy farm over the last 50 years. Sitting around me were about nine other farmers all of whom had similar stories of the struggles and triumphs they had experienced. These men and one woman who surrounded me had all worked hard and fought for their farms for almost their whole lives. Sitting and listening to them talk about how the new imposing government regulations would completely change the way that they had to run their farming operations left me in awe and saddened. Being the youngest person there by at least 30 years these conversations gave me a new lens with which to view the world. Listening to the struggles that these farmers were facing allowed me to better understand how much the government can influence farming. It also really emphasized to me how the disconnect that the general public has with their food is affecting the way that farmers need to run their operations. Due to a lack of knowledge policymakers are trying to impose stricter regulations some of which make the farmer’s job impossible.

Mines Honors House Community Garden

Maddie Fox (she/they), Nolan Vogel (he/him), Rosalie Rauenzahn (she/her)

At the end of the last growing season, our garden had yielded an abundance of food, allowing us to cater a McBride event. We curated a series of appetizers, each featuring different produce we had grown over the summer, and served them to those attending the event. This was the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work and dedication, and seeing it all come to fruition was immensely satisfying. It was a tangible representation of our commitment to connecting people to their food, with each dish acting as a symbol of the lessons learned and the rewards reaped from dedicated effort. Through this event, we saw the potential impact of small-scale, local agriculture. It strengthened our resolve to continue pursuing sustainable practices and self-sufficiency. Additionally, it reinforced the importance of community and sharing the fruits of our labor. This event not only showcased our harvest but also emphasized the power of collective effort and the joy of sharing it with others.

Western Regional Honors Conference

Long Beach, California

Ryan Kennett (She/her)

While attending the Honors Conference in Long Beach, California, I had an opportunity to visit a sacred site called Puvungna, an area of gathering, learning, and exchange for the native Tongva people. While visiting the site, located in the heart of Orange County, I learned about the socio-political struggles of the land and its people, The struggles became prevalent as the West was settled and tribes in California were attempting to gain legal recognition; a majority of the tribes were not legally recognized due to their documentation never making it to Washington D.C. This lack of recognition didn鈥檛 only apply to the people; it applied to the land in which the Tongva people cared for. In 1972, several artifacts (primarily human remains) were dug up from the site; they were boxed up and put in the college of liberal arts at Long Beach University. Though the remains were reburied in 1979, the site had to go through a demanding legal process to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and despite that recognition, is still struggling today. After almost being turned into a strip mall, push-back from the community has only gotten stronger, and the site remains a place of ceremony and spiritual connection.

Partners in the Parks: Appalachian Trail

Allie Morton

A moment I remember quite well was on our last night of the trip. After we filled our stomachs to our heart’s content at a buffet-style restaurant, we sat in a circle by the campfire and told stories of how the trip impacted us. Everyones’ takeaway was drastically different. From Lee’s impressions of us, to Aubre’s desire to enter environmental journalism, I realized that nature has a wild way of influencing us, and of ultimately connecting us. We were quite vulnerable with each other, despite having only known each other for a week. We shared hugs and wept tears over a week we would not forget, surrounded by the majestic trees of Georgia, and compassionate company. It felt magical.
